The Haines City community is mourning the tragic death of 26-year-old Deshaun Smith, who was killed in a devastating multi-vehicle crash in Winter Haven, Florida, on Monday, October 5, 2026. Smith was driving his Jeep on Lucerne Park Road when a chain reaction sent a school bus into his path. Authorities said he died at the scene.
The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. on State Road 544, also known as Lucerne Park Road, about a mile and a half west of U.S. 27. Investigators said a white Chevrolet Malibu traveling west crossed the double-yellow center line and struck the rear portion of an eastbound school bus carrying Winter Haven High School students. The force of that collision pushed the bus across the roadway and into Smith’s oncoming Jeep.
